NUCLEAR BLAST FESTIVALS IV

Budapest, E-klub, 1.10.2000
CREMATORY / DESTRUCTION / RAISE HELL / KATAKLYSM
It was 1st of October, the day I always waited for. I was at E-klub 8 hours before the beginning of the show to see how the gods, i.e. DESTRUCTION, arrive. First arrived the tour bus of CREMATORY & KATAKLYSM somewhere 11:00 am and just four hours later arrived the bus of DESTRUCTION & RAISE HELL. Unfortunately HYPOCRISY left the tour right before this day, because of Peter Tägtgren's electro project PAIN that booked some gigs for these days.

KATAKLYSM
The masters of Canadian Blasting Death Metal KATAKLYSM started the show with an awesome dose of brutality. They played mainly from their new album "The Prophecy (Stigmata of the Immaculate)" of course. Songs like "Stormland" or "As My World Burns" were just fantastic. Keep up the Northern Hyperblast guys!!!

RAISE HELL
Swedish RAISE HELL followed the program with their modern Thrash-Death-Metal-like assault. These guys looked really young, but the music was quite worth listening to. "Dance with the Devil" is my favorite song from them. Of course they palyed a few of songs from their debut "Holy Target", but they lead a big emphasis on the new tracks from "Not Dead Yet" album. The crowd accepted them right after thier first riffs. So they left a very good impression in me as well as in the Hungarian Metal fans. These guys are full of great ideas. So I'm more than sure that we will hear a lot about them in the future. No doubt!

DESTRUCTION
Finally the time has come... After a short intro in which Schmier (with distored voice) announced their back, the godz of Thrash Metal rushed at the crowd with the riffs of "The Butcher Strikes Back". It was a dream come true believe me. Some years back I never thought that once I'll see the classic (OK, only 2/3 of the band) line-up playing live and now it is more than reality. Their sound was fantastic. They used some light show and a few explosions to make their show memorable. "Curse the Gods" followed in their repertory with the mega heavy riffs of Mike and roaring bass lines of Schmier. Sven is a really skilled & talentful drummer, he played the old songs a way better than his predecessors. "Eternal Ban" was the next in the row. It was amazing everyone sung the refrain altogether: "United we stand - eternal ban - together we are strong - eternal ban". Oh and then came "Tears of Blood" with its destructive song-structure. This song killed very well. The next two songs "Life without Sense" and "Bestial Invasion" were modified a little. In the first case they played the entire song a bit slower concentrating more on the heaviness of the riffs, while in the latter case it was on the contrary. "Bestial Invasion" indicated us the half time of their show, I think. It turned after a while into the great instrumental piece "Beyond Eternity" which bursted out in the technical riffing of "Release from Agony". I feared that it won't sound perfectly with three instruments but I was wrong fortunately. It went pretty oiled. The 3rd track from "All Hell Breaks Loose" album, namely "World Domination of Pain" amazed me quite a lot. Ripping riffs and brutal vocals in the refrain, which were presented to us by both Schmier and Sven on backing vocals (he has a very deep voice by the way). And with their mega cool song "Mad Butcher" they reached the top of the show, there's no doubt. It was definitely an all time favorite. Then the infernal trio released on us "Final Curtain" and there was no way out from their Thrash Metal massacre. After a little pause we had drowned into the intro of "Sentence of Death" EP that turned into the famous riffs of "Total Desaster". This song meant to be the end of their show, but luckily they decided to present us with an extra song that was no other than "Tormentor". Hell yeah! With its powerful riffs they finished their extraordinary show and promised us to return in 2001 along with KREATOR and SODOM. I have no words to explain you how perfect they were, but the importance of their new mission now is clear (I referred to the 2nd verse of "The Butcher Strikes Back" song, because Schmier defined it the way I wanted to say). You can expect more infernal overkills in the future, it's sure!

CREMATORY
Well, to be honest CREMATORY wasn't my cup of tea and after the devastating show of DESTRUCTION they sounded pretty weak, but that's only my opinion. Songs like "Tears of Time", "I Never Die" and "Crematory" brought some potential into the eyes of Hungarian fans. Everything was professional, though their stage-work looked really monotonous. As for the songs of their new album "Believe" I should point out that those were too keyboard-oriented and here and there they turned into boring slow parts. In my view it would be better to put 'em at least before RAISE HELL.
