Finally, the release date of Monstrosity's new album, "Screams from Beneath the Surface", is approaching. With that in mind, I asked drummer Lee Harrison a few questions, and he gave some very interesting and concise answers. Now let's take a closer look at this fresh news and see what we can expect from Monstrosity soon!!!
Hello Lee! How is work progressing on the 7th Monstrosity LP?
It's finished and ready to gofinally! After years of refining all of the riffs, the structures, and all of the production details, the album is fully mixed, mastered, and locked in. This marks a major milestone for us, as we've poured everything into making it our strongest effort yet.
How many songs can we expect there?
It will be 10 songs on this one. Lots of good ones. We're pretty happy with it all. If you are into our older stuff you should get into this stuff as well. We've had a pretty positive response so far so we can't complain.
What was it like working with Jim Morris and Jason Suecof again?
It was good. It's very easy working with Jasonwe get along really well, and he understands exactly what we're trying to accomplish. He presents ideas to make the songs better, and it really helps out. He doesn't just treat it like it's a job he's trying to get through; he understands our vision, helping us push the creative side of things while keeping our death metal roots.
When do you plan to release it?
The release date is March 13, 2026, licensed by Conquest Music to Metal Blade worldwide this time. The partnership with Metal Blade has continued since 2004 when we released "Rise to Power", so we have a good working relationship and look forward to more things in the future!
Since the release of your previous album, "The Passage of Existence" (2018), your lineup has changed quite a bit. Please introduce the new lineup to the readers.
The lineup for this one is Ed Webb on vocals, Matt Barnes on guitars, myself on drums, and we've brought back our original bassist Mark Van Erp, which has been really cool. Mark's return brings that classic chemistry from our early days, adding authenticity and groove to the new material while Ed's powerful delivery and Matt's riffing elevate everything to a new level of aggression.
Musically and lyrically, where are you going with the new material?
We've always kind of stuck to our main formulablistering death metal with technical precision and memorable hooks. We do throw in some surprises here and there. We don't go completely in a new direction, but we do try to add some interesting and new ideas, like unexpected tempo shifts, atmospheric layers, and lyrical themes exploring existential horror, cosmic decay, and human frailty in deeper, more narrative-driven ways.
Speaking of which, who was responsible for writing the new stuff?
I wrote a lot of the album with the help of Matt Barnes. Four of the songs were written before we even finished the last album, so I've been working on it for quite a bitrefining them over years to ensure they fit seamlessly. Matt has one song that is kind of his baby; it's a cool song with crushing riffs and a unique structure that stands out as a highlight. That one is called "Fortunes Engraved in Blood".
Are you planning some extensive US and European tours in support of the new record in 2026?
Yes, that is the plan. We want to tour as much as we canhitting clubs, festivals, and major venues to bring the new tracks live. Hopefully now with Ed in the band, we can keep touring consistently. Our previous singer wasn't into touring, and we lost a lot of ground because of it, but I'm hoping we can keep the ball rolling this time and rebuild that momentum we had.
Do you already have some gigs or festivals confirmed?
We have Maryland Deathfest and Brutal Assault confirmed at the moment. Expecting some more announcements pretty soon, so yeah, we're looking to lock in more dates to make 2026 a non-stop assault.
In June 2023, The Metalhead Box released an interesting split with Malevolent Creation, featuring all 4 tracks of your 90's "Horror Infinity" demo. What should readers know about this special and very limited CD edition?
They should know it is extremely limitedlol! Only a handful were pressed, making it a true collector's gem for die-hard fans. It was something fun to do, resurrecting those raw, early '90s demo tracks alongside Malevolent Creation's contributions, capturing the unpolished ferocity of underground death metal's golden era.
I would say that your drumming is instantly recognizable and technical at the same time. Which drummers had a big influence on your playing in the early days? Please list some of your favorites.
A lot of great players have shaped my styleall the usual suspects, of course, like Dave Lombardo for his speed and power, Gene Hoglan for precision in chaos and double bass, and Pete Sandoval for blast-beat innovation. Hanging with Sean Reinert in the early days was a good influence, I know; his progressive flair pushed me technically. There's really too many to list. I think it's amazing how good the young kids are these days, really taking this style and moving forward with it. I think it was in danger of getting stale, and guys like Derek Roddy and George Kollias took things to another level and broke some barriers people didn't think were possible, so I think that was good for the drumming scene overall, inspiring a younger generation.
Let's talk a little bit about your current drum kit. What are you using these days? I mean, which brand of drums, snare type, cymbals, pedals, triggers, etc.
I still have my Sonor kitreliable, resonant, and tuned for that signature Monstrosity punch with a deep, aggressive tone. Zildjian cymbals all around for their crisp attack and durability in live settings. I'm currently endorsed by Axis pedals; they've been great to me, offering unmatched speed and response for double-kick insanity. I really like what they are doing with their designs. I'm using the TM2 trigger module by Rolandit works really good, and you can use customizable sounds, so it's nice for blending acoustic power with electronic enhancements in the studio or on stage.
What news do you have from Conquest Music Inc. and are there any new releases planned?
At the moment, we are helping to promote the new Monstrosity with Metal Blade, ensuring it gets the push it deserves globally. Possibly some more Midnight from Crimson Glory releaseswe have been releasing the work I did with him before he passed away, honoring his legacy. We did a 3-CD set of his original music and a special CD box and vinyl's of a covers album called "Through Oceans of Space", which was mastered at Morrisound and is pretty cool with its spacey, heavy vibes. May have a DVD or some other special releases coming; we'll see as things develop.
A new trend these days is to reissue all early material in LP, CD and MC formats, be it demos or highly sought after first albums. So I'd be very interested to know if there are any such reissues in the plans, especially for "Imperial Doom".
Nothing planned for "Imperial Doom" at the moment. We get a lot of people askingit's flattering how much demand there is for that debut's raw energybut right now we are focused on the new album. So that's where we are at with things: full steam ahead on fresh material before diving into the archives.
Thank you very much for the interview. The ultimate thoughts of Monstrosity are yours.
Thanks for the support. Hope to see you on the roadcome out, bang your head, and let's make 2026 unforgettable with the new album!
