The most brutal psycho-penetrators of Ukraine strikes back again with their second masterpiece. This time they unleashed a stuff which can pretend, without doubt, to the throne of some so-called brutal Death Metal bands overhere. Musically, the path these five musicians follow can be described as a mix of CANNIBAL CORPSE and CRYPTOPSY, though their stuff not reflect the before mentioned bands' styles directly, but on the contrary they try to make their own original way of massive killing. Old (vocals) was cool enough and answered all the questions. Get ready and be prepared for the brutal invasion of MENTAL DEMISE.
First of all, describe to us the members of MENTAL DEMISE one by one. (Age, job, interests, etc.)
- O.K. Toukan (bass) 22 years old. He is a miner interests - bass, death metal. Tom Grinder (drums) 22 years old and he like brutal death and grindcore. Fester (guitar) 24 years old. He is a fan of death metal and works on photo-firm together with Tom. Pinky (guitar) 17 years old, he is a student. Interests are similar to other's members ones. And me, Old (vocals), I'm 20 years old and I'm student too. Interests - psychology and extreme music. So, that all, in common.
"Psycho-Penetration" is your second demo. What's the response to it been like? How have you been promoting the demo? Have you gotten any label interest at all? Is it available through any native or foreign distributors?
- We got good criticism, but promotion - it's a problem number one: if you want to promote your material good, so you must have a lot of money. Our underground too weak to support bands on worthy level (bad gigs organization, fucking government, poor economy), and if you want to became a professional band - no place for you in that country! "Psycho-Penetration" must be released on Imbecil Entertainment in MC format soon. Now this demo is distributed by Maniacal Brutality Productions and Distribution. Also we got a deals from some foreign distributors and we plan to release "Psycho-Penetration" in MC format on one of the foreign labels.
The biography says that your demo "Psycho-Penetration" including conceptual psychological lyrics. Could you please explain us this conception in details and how this conception came about?
- Conception came accidentally. It's about „mad genius". O.K. it's a old story! But there are many versions of it and we chose one of it. Once upon a time, unknown man want to change human's existence, by means of influence of their emotions. He want to erase all the negative emotions out, but something was wrong in his calculations and mankind begun to degradate. In final: civilization devoured itself...
What bands does MENTAL DEMISE see as being influential on the band? I hear a cross between the bands like CANNIBAL CORPSE and DEICIDE, do you agree with this?
- Bands as GUTTED, UNDERCRAFT, PYREXIA, SUFFOCATION, DEEDS OF FLESH, DEICIDE and, of course, CANNIBAL CORPSE are influent us. What about DEICIDE, maybe, some elements are meet in our music, but for a little...
You have a new demo coming out soon... Could you tell us a little about it? Where will it be recorded? Will the songs (length, lyrical content, song structure) be any different?
- Yes, our promo-tape will be out in 1999. Promo will include 5-6 new tracks + instrumental/outro in atmospheric wave. Songs' structure are more complicated. Lyrics - more abstract and crazy. Music - more brutal and extreme.
What is your opinion about the Black Metal genre?
- Black Metal in it original version - dull and monotonous thing. Moreover, many black metal ones spare their time to quarrel between other ones, but not to music! Of course, some black metal elements are decorate some kind of music, and it's cool!
Your music is full of brutality... Do you concentrate on making every song as brutal as possible, or are there other things you consider?
- Brutal death - in our blood and brains. So, we concentrate on making every song as emotional as possible, and our emotions are brutalize day by day!
Have you played a lot of shows? Where have you played, who have you played with and are there any exciting stories?
- Not so lot, nearly 14. We have played in East Ukraine and there were local gigs. We have played with INFECTED, NOKTURNAL MORTUM, ECLIPSE, UNGOLIANTHA, BENIGHTED SKY, BLAST, ST. VALENTINE'S DAY, ARTEFACTED IRRELIGION and others. Exciting stories? Hm, our life - big and fucking exciting story!
What do you think about:
a.) the Ukrainian underground scene - Ukrainian underground has many good bands, but our fucking government is press this movement down. Hope, best times will come and Ukraine will present some excellent bands to world!
b.) the Scandinavian mythology - It is interesting! But mythology, as it is, in the past. We're live in real world.
c.) corpse-paint - Theatre and metal: it's romantic! Ha, ha!
d.) pain and pleasure - Pain for masochists, pleasure for sadists. Of course, we're all sado-masochists for a little... We like it, pleasure - most of all!
e.) good and evil - Everlasting battle in human mind. No reason to interfere there... It will last eternally...
What do you wish to do with MENTAL DEMISE in the future?
- In the future we'll wish to be alive! We and MENTAL DEMISE!
