EOSPHORUS

Unfortunately this is the last interview that was conducted by Kate "Outsider" (R.I.P.) in co-operation with Georgius of DOMHRING. They interviewed Oliver Spetze (guitar/vocals) of Swedish EOSPHORUS and luckily for some answers other band members also joined in. In some ways EOSPHORUS follows the dark path initiated by legendary DISSECTION, the masters of anti-cosmic metal of death!!! Thus I can just recommend to all those blackened souls out there to check this great band from Sweden! Let the chaos unite your dark hearts & souls!!!

Ave! Please tell me about EOSPHORUS, when was it founded and introduce the members of the band.
Hail! We (Markus and Oliver) started EOSPHORUS (back then, DARKTATION) in the beginning of 2006 in Stockholm, Sweden. We had a lot of passion for the music, but no idea on how to play extreme metal, we just began writing material for our first demo and the first songs we recorded were a strange mix of SLIPKNOT, COB, EKTOMORF and everything in between. Really strange stuff...
We wanted to play extreme metal cause' that was the only genre that really spoke to us. Some people need more than just going to work, coming home, and then going to sleep. Black metal makes us see beyond the everyday tragedy that ordinary people call "life". More and more we were drawn to the darker and more sinister realm of metal.
The first song we were really satisfied with, and which set the standard of the band, was "Statue of Hate", it made us look deeper into ourselves and from there we have kept on going. Songs like "After Death" and "Blood of the North" was recorded, but at that time we didn't even have a drummer to rehearse the songs with.
We started to search for drummers, very intensively... We tried a few ones out but no one fit the bill. There was one drummer who was great and we even looked for a rehearsal space together with him, it was very serious, then he just fucking split and bought a house up north.
We felt it was hopeless to get a hold of a good drummer. Then, out of nowhere, Sercan Kaya sent us an email. He had seen an ad we'd posted on a website. He was real excited and wanted to jam with us. We didn't want to rush things like we did with the other drummer so we asked him to send a few videos of him playing. We thought he was really bad, but we figured we could give him a chance to prove himself worthy. And now, here we are, with Sercan as our battery-master since 2009.
We played without a bassplayer for about four months when we realized that if we want to do gigs we have to have a bassplayer. We started to jam with a guy named Oscar, and it went great for about two weeks, then we had to let him go. The booking of a gig was upon us and we had to take drastic measures, so we contacted Joel Haegerström of SEPTIC REMAINS, a dear old friend of ours, to play the bass. He was real excited about it and he's been playing with us since then. It's still unclear if he's going to remain as our bassplayer. We'll see what happens in the future...
What have you released by now? Who composes the music and writes the lyrics?
We've had good contact with a Canadian underground label called Alchemic Sound Museum, and we're hoping to work with them in the future concerning releases and stuff. We haven't released any final production yet, but the time will come.
Me and Markus compose the music, and for drums we just lay out a basic frame for the song, then Sercan adds his touch as you might call it. It's great to have Markus in the band coz he's been properly educated in music and music theory, and he brings good shit to the table. I write the lyrics and Markus contribute every once in a while. Because I am the one who have to sing it, it can be pretty worthless singing someone else's thoughts and words, I want to be able to stand for what I say and for what I believe in. But we all think alike so it's never that hard to write lyrics together.
I saw pictures from your live shows on EOSPHORUS' MySpace site. Your gigs seem quite intense. Please tell me about your live performances. Did you play somewhere else except Sweden?
That gig was really intense, unbelievably brutal. We don't quite remember that gig so well cause' we were so wasted. Well, me and Markus were wasted, anyways. We must have drained the bar out of all the fluids that night. I drank to steady my nerves before the gig, Markus drank coz he had to. Haha.
Playing live has become more and more like a ritual for us. Sound cliché for a black metal band, we know, but that's how it is. After a gig you have to feel the energy, a sort of invisible mist that embraces you and sends chills down your spine, making you want more, and more, and more. We don't demand that the audience goes berserk and form circle pits in the venue at every gig, but we do demand them to open their eyes and souls to feel what we feel. We want them to relate.
We have only done shows in Stockholm so far. We look forward to play in other parts of the world. Especially Italy, France, Germany, USA and South America. Countries like Poland and Ukraine seem to have a very respectable scene and we'd love do shows there as well.
Do you play covers at your live shows, if yes, then which ones?
Every once in a while we go in to a state of mind, and just want to salute the great ones who have contributed to the strengthening of Chaos. We have played "Where Dead Angels Lie" by DISSECTION once before, and we are thinking of playing more covers live, but we'll have to see what happens in the future.
I see you come from Stockholm, is there anything like the Golden Age of Death Metal? What bands are you in contact with?
Around Stockholm, Gothenburg, Uppsala and various cities there is still a strong hunger for death and black metal music. We have great contact with SEPTIC REMAINS, of course. Other bands we have contact with occasionally are LIONS SHARE, INSANIA, FROZEN STEEL and VISION among others.
I saw Jon Nödtveidt among your top-friends on MySpace. Did you meet him personally, what is your opinion about him as a person and musician? Does he inspire you?
We never knew him personally, we bumped in to him in Stockholm during the summer 2006 and said hello, that's it. But we honour him for his beliefs and for his contribution to death and black metal. He has inspired us on many levels including music and philosophy.
What are your favourite books and what is your favourite album?
Oliver: My favourite book at the time is Liber Azerate, I find it very interesting. Although I've never been much of a reader, I'm beginning to read more and more. I actually read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a while ago, after seeing the movie a thousand times. The book is better.
My favourite album is a hard one. I would have to go with "The Somberlain" by DISSECTION. It's a masterpiece. But "Storm of Light's Bane" by DISSECTION and "Sworn to the Dark" by WATAIN are also up there.
Markus: I don't get to read that much but I did listen to The Da Vinci code on soundbook, it was okay, and things that tends to piss of the Vatican really makes me smile.
My absolute favourite album must be "The Somberlain", it was such a strong debut from a young band and a new era. There is so much great music out there but outside metal I also listen to classical music like Beethoven, Albinoni, Tchaikovsky and Wagner but never in Major scales. They all seem to share a very good sense of harmony, but also deliver some darker energy.
Joel: Lord of the Rings, cause' fantasy is one of my big interests.
"Brave New World" by IRON MAIDEN got me interested in metal, it's the whole reason why I even listen to it. "Kill 'em All" by METALLICA got me to start playing guitar so I have to go with that one, too.
Sercan: I used to play a game called The Witcher and it came to my knowledge that the game was based on a book, or a trilogy actually. So I read the trilogy and it's my favourite. A good game and good books.
My favourite album at the moment is "Evangelion" by BEHEMOTH. The music and the lyrics is something I can really relate to, and Inferno is a really good drummer, and also my number one inspiration.
Do you have any hobby besides playing music?
Oliver: Music is the only thing.
Markus: Sex, magic and alcohol.
Joel: Religion and fantasy.
Sercan: Hanging out, playing video games and watching movies.
Can you name any Hungarian or Ukrainian black/death hordes?
TORMENTOR from Hungary and HATE FOREST and FLESHGORE from Ukraine. And DOMHRING, of course!
Tell me please about your plans for the future? Are you going to release anything?
As said before; we're hoping to record an EP and releasing it to a distro. When it's going to happen is hard to say. Right now we're just going to do some gigs and write more songs.
Tack så mycket! Is there anything you would like to say to our readers?
Trust in Chaos and the dark gods, Mahapralaya will come!
