The province of Québec getting stronger and bigger every day. I guess all of you know such monsters of Death Metal as CRYPTOPSY, GORGUTS or KATAKLYSM for instance. If so, you have the chance to discover another good technical Death Metal band, namely APHASIA, whose brand of active groups having 5-6 gigs per months. I asked Steph (guitar/vocals) to tell us more of their first release and local scene of Québec.
APHASIA appeared in 1996. Describe us the main movements of the development since 1996.
- We have always the same kind of music since 1996. Little bit different... We had some line-up change but J-F and I are always there for the band. The difference since 1996 is the maturity acquire by the band and the drum
have change from grind to technical (more bass-drum with a lot of good drumming riff).
What can you tell us about the bandmembers? Have you played in any other band before 1996?
- For now, we are just 2 (J-F and I) cuz the drummer lets the band like 1 month ago. I never played with other band. I play before with J-F but just for fun. To the other side, J-F played guitar for a band called DARK SUPREMACY. This band is no longer alive... He was dead a few month before their demo launching in 1994-5 (I think!).
I feel the strong influence of Gothenburg style in your music. How do you see it?
- Gothenburg style???? I don't really know what is Gothenburg style but I'm happy.... eheheh!!!! :-)
"Beyond The Infinite Horizon" is your first album. What was the fans' reaction and do you satisfied with the reviews you got so far?
- The fans seems like the CD... We had some very good review for the CD, to the other side, we had some bad review but it's good to have excellent and bad review, so you can have a good idea of the CD. But most of the time, we had good review, maybe I didn't see the bad review?!?!?!? I'm very proud of the production of this CD, thanks to Jean-Francois Dagenais for his excellent work.
What is your lyrics about? Are there any messages or thoughts you find important to tell us more about.
- I talk about the nature (forest, winter, water....). It's some stories that everyone can imagine its own history of the song. I didn't talk about politic or society, I hate those subjects. I don't think that our lyrics have any messages, it's just a story.
Could you initiate us into the underground scene of Québec?
- The scene is very big here. We have a lot of show, like 1-2 shows per week. In general, everybody listen death metal bands like DYING FETUS, DEEDS OF FLESH but we can see Black Metal growing. We have very good bands here like CRYPTOPSY, GORGUTS, OBLIVEON, KATAKLYSM... I think that Québec is a very good place for the underground stuff. All my friend that come from a different country or province find our scene very excellent, they never saw a scene like that. We have also a good selection in CD but we don't have a good selection for the t-shirt or long sleeve... Oh well, we can't have everything good!!!
You make gigs very often. Have you any special images on these gigs? Who have you played with and are there any exciting stories?
- We don't have any special images... When we play, we are like every day (funny!!!). We are playing just for fun so when we are on the stage, we play, make fun, drink beer, smoke joint (just before the show). We have nothing to prove, we play music cuz we like it so we play and make fun and if people thrash or make fun with us... We're very happy... We have played with a lot of local band like KATAKLYSM, DRAGON LORE, VOCIFERATION, FATALITY, RACE DEFECT, etc. and some bands outside Québec like: SARCOPHAGUS, MORTAL DECAY, etc... And maybe soon, a very big show but I can't say nothing... ehehe!!!
Give us more information about the contract with WARFARE Records.
- WARFARE Records is a distributor... So we don't have any contract with them, just a little one for the distribution. But WARFARE Records, it's a company born in Québec and they promote a lot of band from the province of Québec so we are very happy to be on their list. Cheer to WARFARE Records to help Québec bands to promote their album around the world. Soon, we will be distributed by RELAPSE Records (I must send the CDs this week) and maybe by SOUNDSCAPE Records for the Canada.
What can you say about the following points:
a.) nuclear weapons - Crap!
b.) terrorism - Maybe, it's usefull but we don't need terrorism every time, we can change thing without terrorism and without violence.
c.) religions - Stupid thing... I don't trust any religions. It's just some stories to get weak people....
d.) new wave of old styles (Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, etc.) - Good thing for the old metal fan but personally, I don't like this kind of music. Maybe, people don't have any more idea to create new music or maybe they just like this kind of music. I don't really care about this, every body MUST do what they like and no what people want....
e.) life and death - Life: party, beer, weed... Death: Nothing!!!! No more party....
What are your plans for the future? In what way will be your next material?
- We have loss our drummer so for now, we are seeking for a new drummer and during this time, we compose new song. Always in the same kind of music, I hope that we can record a full length CD (about 60 minutes) in 1-2 years... But the next material will not change, we will have more experience so we will use this for our next materil but always in the same vein....
